Hey yalls.
thanks for all the emails this week! A neeeeeeew record! 32! keep them coming! I love hearing from you! AND SEEING PICTURES hint hint (mom, how many months has it been since i´ve seen pictures of you and dad and my brothers? years? hah just kidding)
HAPPY JUNE man i love june. so happy i was born in it.
WELL i have learned lots of new skills for my future marriage from this week. Such as talking and apologizing and being sensitive and careful and more humble and altruistic... the list goes on. seriously the hardest, longest, most teaching week of my mission. First off i offended and kept offending sister Fuller (by interupting her in lessons and stuff) without really knowing it and of course not meaning to and i tried to apologize and it didn´t work. Then at church President and Sister Fluckiger were there (mission president and wife) and i talked to sister fluckiger after and asked her for help and she suggested we have a little talk right there. But i found out after that that had REALLY hurt sister fuller.. So i really have had to be way more humble than i´ve ever wanted to be (which is way good for me hah) and apologize sincerely afterwards--aka this morning) but thankfully she forgave me hopefully she´ll forget it and we can move on and just be friends. I have really learned a whole new meaning to Ether 12:27 that i thought i had already learned at the beginning of my mission.. that IF men come unto Christ He will show us our weaknesses. I´ve been humbled this week because of my weaknesses and praying for help that i can continue to recognize what they are (that´s probably why i+m here in this area with sister Fuller, for her to teach me how prideful i am and how not to be--for serious.) Christ can help us when we are humble so that our weaknesses may become strengths. I know it is through hard things that we learn how to be more humble.
well we are in a land with lots of awesome Africans! (I saw a store that said it was for brazilians and africans called Brafrican i thought that was epic.)  We marked one for baptism this week and she´ll get baptized on Saturday! And then we have another awesome Portuguese young man named Tiago who will be baptized the week after. Yay baptisms!! These guys are awesome and understand that this is will change how they live their lives to be in harmony with the teachings of Jesus Christ!  Man! Love this area! It is hard in the way we have to walk for a half our to get to our area and a half hour back from our house but i swear all my skirts are getting looser so that´s good hehe
well here´s how long my hair is! i hope i´m not bald when i get back though, i swear SO much hair falls out every DAY. Apparently in the MTC Sister Fuller said that someone told them that their hair would fall out on their missions. Good thing i didn´t hear that because i probably would have just said see ya and walked right back home. Good thing i´ve learned to be a little bit more humble cuz i don´t really care anymore. Lots of hair falls out and my pony-tail is tiny now, but meh. Whatevs. if i have no hair when i get back i´ll just cut it into a pixie cut again. yay!
Sister beautiful Cardoso will go to her official mission in England this wednesday! it´s been a joy being and serving with her, one of the best girls and friends from the Azore islands!
k love you all. Be peacemakers. Don´t take offence. Forgive and FORGET IT duh.

My kindred spirit, bosom friend, beautiful Nicole Cardoso from The Azores is on a mini mission here in Portugal. And guess who gets to be in a tripla with her and Sister Fuller for the rest of it until she heads out for her real mission in England? THAT WOULD BE ME and i cried tears of joy. First i cried tears of sadness at the mission conference we had last week when i saw her and was sure i would never see her again in this life, then yesterday i found out that i was the blessed soul who gets to serve with here until she heads out. haha. BUT THE CONFERENCE was amazing. Elder Patrick Kearon from England came and toured our mission. That means he came and held multi-zone conferences on the islands of the Azores, and Madeira and had two more on continental Portugal. HE WAS AMAZING. IS AMAZING. he told me everything i needed to hear. gah. i took really the best notes i could (with my left hand, yes i am still doing that, you thought i stopped didn´t you) but still didn´t even give it justice. K well sorry no pictures. but Sister Crossman keeps a blog and even though i won´t be on anymore updates probably i´m in some. there are your pictures.

WHAT

ANOTHER WEEK GONE BY?!?!

whoa. time flies when you´re having fun.

But some days it´s like a heard of turtles on cold tar going backwards uphill. #insidejokewithsisterKROPFsomethinglikethatright?faztempo

it was kinda sad yesterday we were knocking doors (well, here there are gates in front of houses if it´s not an apartment building so technically we were ringing doorbells) and we rang one doorbell that got stuck and the doorbells here are not (normally) the cute little ding-dong someone´s here that loves you song that the doorbells sing in the US of A but rather a BEEEEEERRRRRRRZZZZZZZZZZZZ SOMEONE THAT HATES YOU IS DISTURBING YOUR AFTERNOON noise (it´s unpleasant) so we were standing there outside freaking out while this SUPER annoying noise goes off in their house and we couldn´t do anything about it besides try to get it unstuck and prepare ourselves for angry people to come outside and yell at us. Surely that´s what happened but it was a little bit older (about 60 years old) lady who was at first really rude (understandably) but we used our power of the cuteness and made friends. (people here are super open with any personal problems) so she goes straight into how she has depression and how she´s not happy to which we held her hand and listened without really saying who we were or why we were there but then suddenly her maybe 25-30 year old son comes out and says quem é (who are you)? And then it gets personal as he starts speaking perfect english and says we are not interested, come on mom, we aren´t interested. She´s trying to get out of his grip because she wants to talk to us and is objecting the whole time and I say we aren´t Jehovah´s Witnesses (this is how people usually reply when they think we are JW´s) and her son says You´re mormon´s right? I say yes, and he says yeah we aren´t interested. so he (mostly) gently just pulls her back inside but then i hear him say under his breath "fanatics" to which i said back We just have a strong belief in Jesus Christ, there is nothing wrong with that and he just grumbles a yeah whatever and then it was over. pretty sad. i wonder what lie he´s heard hah. but it was sad cuz that lady was totally wanting to talk to us... but we said a prayer for her and hopefully she is okay.

Well i am out of time but i love you all and i got a SICK farmer tan yesterday

mom would you send me some doTerra Lavender oil too? i use it when i get sunburned (i do put on 60spf every day but i miss places sometimes) and it feels super nice to have that and it helps so much. if you can i´d super appreciate it... but don´t worry about it if you can´t.

Love you ALL!

send me a quick email saying hey if you read this so i can know to keep you on my email list. i don´t know who still wants to get my emails.

Sister Shumway

ps. aunt Jan can you send me a picture of Pregnant Kaily? haha thanks!

4.21.2014

hotties.

HELLO AGAIN!

Yet another week has gone by in the beautiful Portugal. And i guess everywhere else too. hah

Sister Juilfs is supes awesome. But all of a sudden we have been eating lunches and dinners with lots of members´ families which like never happened before now and it´s awesome for me but poor sister Juilfs has always had a really bad stomach problem that doctors have not been able to find out what causes it but pretty much she can´t eat anything outside of most fruits and veggetables. If she eats anything else she gets terrible stomach pains. The members wonder how she is still alive even though she can´t eat meat (which is basically included in every meal and snack in some way here.) But we just go to the store and buy a salad for her to take incase they didn´t make one. Needless to say she´s super healthy. She can eat rice, but she hasn´t really liked it before until she tried mine! WHABAM! can i say pronta para casar? #no. But anyway i kinda want to try her diet while i´m with her. So i´ll live on oatmeal, apples, salad, spinach, cucumbers, carrots, rice cakes, and whatever else she can eat for the next 5 weeks at least. (i´m going to try  to do it... this week i´ll just buy what she can eat but there are still a few more things in the house i´ll finish up but after that... vegan diet on sterioids baby.)

Like two and a half months ago when i was with Sister Lybbert it was the end of the day and "super" late, like 9 o´clock and pitch black outside (other missionaires--we go in at 9:30pm and the lattest we can be out is 10pm, we wake up at 7 hah) when we decided to do what we don´t normally like to do under those circumstances: try to enter apartment buildings and knock doors. But on the first doorbell we rang of the first building we tried (the building of a less active member we had just talked earlier in the day) (they have all the doorbells on a little panel by the main entrance to the apartment building) with outsomeone even coming over the intercom to ask who we were they unlocked the door from their house and let us into the building. We were surprised but headed up to the top (third) floor where we had rung) and knocked on thier door. This cute about 37 year old lady we found out to be named Mara, a brazilian opened the door and to our surprise and delight invited us to come in. (this never happens with normal portuguese people... the assume we are there to steal their souls or something right of the bat usually hah) We kind of stood there for a second apologizing for the late time we passed by and that we didn´t really need to come in and bother them etc but she insisted and we went in and when we asked if we could just say a quick prayer and come back another day she agreed and so we said a prayer and included her little kids in the prayer cuz they were sick and then planned with her to come back the day after next to teach about the plano de salvação which we left a panflet for. So we show up two days later and she didn´t answer the door so we wented and visited our less-active member and she said that the lady on the third floor moved yesterday back to brazil. We were pretty shocked and surprised (at first we didn´t really believe her, sometimes people make up stories for their neighboors so we won´t go bother them too haha) but when we kept trying and for a week or two after that no one ever answered the door so we assumed that that was true. We sadly gave up and moved on.
So this Tuesday with Sister Juilfs and I this lady with sunglasses walks by and we recognize each other and we start talking. (i'm playing along pretending I know who she is--happens all the time) but she says hey you'll have to come by and say another prayer for my daughter and niece... we moved up the street here's my addresss.. blah blah awesomeness and then as we were saying goodbye I said I was sorry I don't remember your name, MARA! Okay sweet, bye! DING! it all came flash flooding back. So to make a long story short we go back there and she was baptized when she was 12 and we'll go back and reactivate her haha! sorry if that doesn't make sense I was going to write more but I have to be done like NOW heh
Love you all!!

Bye Sister Lybbert! I love you with all my heart! Have fun in Maia! And we´ll miss you Carregado Elders! We´ll just have the zone leaders  here in Santarém from now on. I love my new comp Sister Juilfs!

SO SICK!

Literally :)

Sister Lybbert has been sick this whole week and I felt fine (which it´s always been the other way around for me on my mission until now) but then last night right as she´s feeling almost all the way better besides a cough is when I got sick. The Elders gave me a blessing so that was nice. I got my essential oils out this time though and I know I don´t feel as bad as I would have right now because of those two things. We are hoping I´ll feel 100% soon so we can get back to the plow and make our last week together AWESOME. I´d just like to bear my testimony of eternal marrige, I´m thankful I´ll get married to my best friend for time and all eternity so that it´s longer than two transfers BUAHahha.  Love you sister Lybbert. (she gets tired of me telling her that.) #awkwardlove #I´llmarryaman

Well someone had a "great" idea to watch all the general conference sessions on Sunday, So that´s what we did. We showed up at the church at like 11:30 as they were ending the priesthood session (BYU-IDAHO´S MEN´S CHOIR HOLLAAA i saw like 5 people i know hah) and then had a lunch break and then watched the Saturday sessions and then the sunday morning session live all in a row... 6.25 HOURS OF SPIRITUAL FEAST! we didn´t get permission to watch the sunday "afternoon" session here this time, (in october we did) it starts at 9pm and goes till 11pm portugal time, and that was too late for us missionaries so we still haven´t seen it. I am hoping we can watch it later today. It was in the last hour of the sunday "morning" session (that started at 5pm here live) that i started getting the hot and cold chills and body aches and a sore throat sickness. I am thankful for my DoTerra lemon oil, (for my b-day could you send me another one of those mother dear? i´m almost out .. Ü)  (with a spoonful of honey helpes the lemon oil go down) that helped my throat not hurt as much.

Well as for spiritual experiences this week we didn´t have many outside our own house (as we were inside it most of the week) But i love personal study time. I WILL ALWAYS MAKE TIME FOR THIS FOR MY WHOLE LIFE it´s so worth it and so necessary... everyone TAKE and MAKE TIME TO READ THE SCRIPTURES and Ensigns and Liahonas and PREACH MY GOSPEL (holla Elder Ballard, you continue to be my favorite #notbiased)

OLIVIA IS AWESOME she´s the one who got baptized on the 18th of March and she´s already being a missionary to her brother (who was actually a contact of ours before we even met her) and helping him gain a testimony of the Book of Mormon. Also an AWESOME family in our ward is helping her and her two sons integrate into the branch faster, they went over and visited them and their son João Pedro took Bruno (olivia´s son) to seminary (where it was just them two there haha but it´s probably better that way. private religion classes! haha)

I LOVED learning what the word Religion meant in General conference! DUH Knowing portuguese i should have noticed that so much earlier! Re-connecting with God. LOVE that. The word for connection in portuguese is ligação, so re-ligação--» religião. WHAT. STELLAR. I´m gonna share that with the people we meet on the street sometime.

K WELL my time is up in this library but not for my alotted p-day time, we´ll see if we can get on again later heh heh but for now TTFN :)

3.31.2014

Vida é assim. Se Deus quiser. Estou com pressa.

Heavenly Father has been teaching me the Christlike qualities of patience, controlling your temper, and charity recently. We´ve been contacting (stopping on the street or knocking the doors of etc) a lot of people who have strong feelings against the precious Book of Mormon and awesome Joseph Smith--basic Mormonism anything. At first I would get all worked up and want to "fight" back, but after a few unsuccessful yet learning experiences on my part, I have learned that keeping calm and offering to say a prayer (which they usually say no to) and thanking them for their time and leaving is a MUCH better way to handle the situation. They still need to be humbled to be able to except Christ´s message and that´s Heavenly Father´s job not mine. hah.
I LOVE the Holy Ghost. I love prayer. I love Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. I am not even worthy to say that, I disobey every day and don´t do my absolute best a lot of the time but at least I know they have mastered the qualities of patience and they love me infinitely and will forgive me of my weaknesses, and even when I disobey or rebel even though repentance from those are harder, I can be forgiven. The spirit has taught me that negative thoughts and feelings of inadequacy are not from Heavenly Father nor does He want me to think them. I am a simple 20 year old girl, yes. But I have a glorious message and divine power, even if some people don´t recognize it. Heavenly Father knows I am not perfect, He knows I will mess up and make mistakes and not choose the right sometimes but that´s where Jesus Christ comes in. He has shown me the way to be like him and be forgiven. As I follow the prophet, the scriptures, the Spirit... I am guided to Them, and I have peace.
The Spirit gave me the idea to read the last general conference Liahona (ensign) before the next general conference this week. Wow. I can´t even explain it. I have never gone back and read all the talks before and I can´t believe how much stuff we miss out on by not going back and reading what we watched/listened to. I invite all who read this letter to do that. Start now with reading last year´s November ensign and read it beginning to end- or as close as you can get before this weekend and then when you get the ensign of this April´s conference in May READ it-- with a highlighter and pen and prayer. (and then in September this year I will read April´s conference again to prepare for October´s conference. Ü ) Wow. I am going to do that for the rest of my LIFE. Such a FEAST. You will not regret it.
Peeps. READ the Book of Mormon. I wish I could say read it in Portuguese, but that might not work for some. I am thankful I can read it in Portuguese because the wording is SO much simpler... I almost understand the scriptures in Portuguese better than English.. but still INTERNALIZE the Book of Mormon the best you can. I am so thankful for the testimony I have of it. I know it is true. I know that the way it came about was miraculous and to some literally unbelievable. But that´s just because they haven´t asked in humble prayer if it could all be true. God is GOD. He can do anything. I have realized that the whole crazy story about how it came about CAN be true and IS true because He can do whatever He wants. (Some guy on the street told us he didn´t believe Joseph Smith´s story and when we asked him if he prayed about it he said no because he doesn´t believe it could be true. Haha. sad. don´t limit GOD buddy.) Yes, they were gold plates. Yes Joseph Smith did have angels appear to him. Yes he did use some weird glasses to help him translate at first. And so on! Why not?
I love this gospel. Faith in Christ. Repentance. Baptism. Gift of the Holy Ghost. Persevering to the end of our mortal LIVES. Tem que ser.

Her boys are seeming to enjoy it all too! The three are marked for the 18th of March and we are SO happy :) They make everything worth it.

This week went all SUMMER on us. We are sure it will get rainy again but we are SOOO enjoying not having to wear tights and coats every day with our rainboots and umbrellas. The sun has been oh so welcome and lots of people are out and about on the street it's almost overwhelming.

WE ARE YOUNG SO WE SET THE WORLD ON FIRE spiritually :)

it´s normal.

letter to the PRESIDENT OF PORTUGAL missionaries

PRESIDENTE FLUCKIGER! OLA! Melhor semana da missão! Bom, eu gostei imenso. Tenho energia. Tenho animo. Tenho fé!
Amo te!

PRESIDENT FLUCKIGER ! HELLO ! Best week of Mission! Well, I liked it a lot. I felt really good at first because my back did not hurt nearly anything and also now have a BIG testimony EXERCISIOS morning ! Always had but I 've always been lazy so maybe I did not . But we were in the running EVERY day besides Sunday and Monday ( cleaned in the house in the morning .. it is all right to do this time on p- day 'or should be during the day ? ) We really had a great change heart , I had at least, and I can say that I WANT to be obedient now . I always knew that I needed to be obedient but it was difficult and stressful but now I try to be obedient. I have stressed each " do this" and " do not do that " in MM and SdMM . (most of them are stressed now haha ) But once I always gave me the excuse "oh I do not know if that's a rule or not," but it was nothing , now I want to know all the rules and save them as were my salvation. The spirit has taught me a lot this week . It reminded me of the job I had when my aunt was my boss and sometimes I was not exactly obedient in what she wanted me to do and after a while I was unemployed . Then the Spirit said this mission is the same thing and even more important ! If you want my bosses, God and Jesus Christ , they were happy with me and trust me (with many researchers and converts ) , need to do everything in my power to obey them is not only working but working hard , all power , mind, and strength . I can say that I really am doing it now. I have energy. I cheer . I have faith !
Love you !

HOLY CANOLI i had a great week peeps. GO RUNNING IN THE MORNING IF YOU WANT TO BE HAPPY i am high on happiness right now. happy happy happy  not even kidding. i have even lost like a kilo or two. HAH plus sister lovely lybbert and I don´t eat chocolate, cookies, cake, and a few more other crappy things anymore so i am like a little ball of health. my back hasn´t been a problem this week hardly either! YAY!

WE HAVE AWESOME INVESTIGATORS!!!!!!! Olivia, whom we said high to in the backery today while grocery shopping and her CUTE LITTLE BOYS Bruno and Ruben (14 and 9 y.o.) RUBEN UG IS SO CUTE just like a little version of JENSIE BO BENSIE love you jens. high five. We just need to pray for her hubby to be interested himself.

AWESOME SENIOR COUPLE ON THE LOOSE in Santarém! They arrived from Bluffdale utah last week and we already love them. The Crossmans!! Please pray for sister crossman cuz she doesn´t speak any portuguese and she´s getting a little downhearted. I know how she feels but it was a long time ago that we first got to brazil and i didn´t even know how to say " i don´t speak portuguese". They are both awesome though and Elder Crossman and President Fluckiger served in the same mission at the same time so that is fun!

Love you all!

We had an awesome week! Besides the fact our numbers were low cuz I have had some pretty bad pain in my back and had to stay home for a few days, we are teaching a beautiful little portuguese family, Olivia the mom, Jorge, the dad, Bruno and Ruben the boys (14 and 9 years old, but Ruben reminds me of a younger version of Jens so much!) We taught them the lessons and are now helping them make a habit of reading the scriptures and having family prayer at night, and Olivia even suggested they do family prayer before they leave for school etc! Her idea! Their dad has been gone for a while but he got back this morning from a business trip and he said he´ll take the boys to church when Olivia has to work so we´re hoping they´ll come through with that. But they live like literally next door to the church so the boys could come by themselves if they wanted.

Okay so about my back, Mom, I went to a physical therapist today and she helped "straighten" me out (it felt so nice) and taught me a few stretches and strengthening exercises I can do to help me fix my back. (I had to go to the emergency room... again... but this time it really was because of pain and not just cuz i had had a cold for two weeks, GOODNESS I´M SO HIGH MAINTENANCE it´s frustrating.) But she told me I need to be more careful about my posture which is what is causing most of the problem and I need to find a good backpack. So yeah I´ve been kind of out of commission for a few days but our wonderful little family we are teaching makes everything worth it.

LAST WEEK OF THE TRANSFER which will probably mean the last week with the beautiful, talented, hilarious, spiritual, righteous, awe-inspiring SISTER LYBBERT. Man I LOVE this girl and I´m going to bawl my eyes out when she gets transfered (everyone PRAY she stays one more with me otay? ;)

K well i love you all
260 more days until a big hug from me. (i get an extra 12 days on my mission hah.)

Subject: God´s Children

The Lord humbles you if you don´t humble yourself to bring you to Him. I see that all around me and in myself too. You don´t realize how prideful you are when you first leave on your mission. "What? no, I´m humble, I´m fine" you think. BAhaha.. yeah uh huh. sure. Nope. You learn you are pretty darn proud. I´m learning that right now but I´m thankful for it because I think deep down I do want to be humble. Humility does not mean weakness or shyness. It´s strength from Heavenly Father. It means realizing that Heavenly Father´s will is more important to follow than your own. It´s doing what He askes.  It´s giving up little things that maybe are probably fine and good for something better or best, which is what He always has in store for us. It means love, love unfeigned (which means unpretended--the things you learn reading the scriptures in another language... who knew i´d learn more English by learning Portuguese?). It means hard work. It means sincerity, being genuine.
You also don´t realize how much of a sinner you are before your mission, or at least I didn´t. I thought I was doing fine. I went to church, I didn´t do bad stuff, I did my best... which is what Heavenly Father wants us to do but He wants me to be something more than that and I can only be better by coming to Jesus Christ and humbling myself so He can show me my weaknesses (which is NO fun) but in the end of each experience like that I am better. I come closer to Them and realize more and more that They really are there and They love me and want me to be the best person I can be at every stage of my life.

tune in next time for Deep Thoughts from Sister Sharmey.
love.

sorry friends i ran out of time, put this in Google translate from portuguese to english :)
